List of applications using Google Gears

Applications using Google Gears are coming up fast. I hope to develop a list in this page. Please leave a comment below if you know of further applications.

Google Gears allows developers to make online applications available offline. So, if you are travelling or not able to access the net for any reason, all the data and the functionalities are available offline. This can revolutionize the use of many applications that we use today. Since the release of Google Gears, I have been looking for a list of applications. Since I did not find one, I decided to start my own. Here’s a modest start, but I expect to build in rapidly in the coming months.

Synki Wiki

The wiki is now available for offline use.

Mind Meister

Mind Meister is a collaborative mind mapping tool and it’s now available offline with Google Gears.

Zoho Writer

Zoho writer is a feature word processor (that can be used like Microsoft Word). The writer is also similar to Google Docs, but with a better assortment of features. With Zoho writer one can created and edit documents online, export them in different formats (e.g. doc, pdf, sxw, etc.), import existing documents, share documents and publish them into blogs. Zoho Writer also has a rich set of keyboard shortcuts for those who cannot do without it. Another useful feature is that documents can be tagged. Creating an account takes just seconds.
Zoho writer is free and can now be used offline with Google Gears. After installing google gears, availing Zoho Writer offline is just one click away. It’s simple to use and can ensure that our documents are now available both offline and online. Please note that the offline version is currently read-only. Within a few weeks Zoho promises to make most features available offline.

Google Reader

Perhaps the first application to use Google Gears. The feedreader is now available offline wtih Google Gears. The reader has some cool features including the “next button” (clicking this takes you to the next unread article of your interest from any page that you are in, it’s cool - check it out).

Remember the Milk Task Manager

Perhaps the best Task Manager available today. RTM has almost all the features one would desire in a task manager and more. This highly smart task manager is now available offline with Google Gears. Fore more details, click here.

Gearpad

A simple application to make notes of ideas and other elementary things that could be accessed from any computer. If you use one laptop/ PC most of the time, and would like your quick notes to be available offline as well, this is a good application. The advantage of this is that we can access the same note from other computers if there is net access.

My Biological Network

I won’t pretend that I know what this website is or does. All I know is that it’s an experiment by a student playing around with Google Gears. Check it out.

Wordpress Offline

A wordpress plugin that enables readers to read our blogs offline. The author of the plugin claims that it’s not fully functional but is still usable already.

Google-Saver Bookmarklet

“Dready” has made an innovative use of Google Gears and has created a bookmarklet that will take the text content offline from any post or wiki we are writing. The bookmarklet allows us to get all our text materials offline into Google Gears to ensure that we do not loose materials in the process of uploading. I am yet to test this application, but it surely looks like a useful thing to have.

EXT 2 - Simple Task Manager

This is a simple task manager with functions that match MS Outlook. With gears this is now offline. My favourite continues to be Remember the Milk!

Soduku offline

For Soduku buffs, here’s a small application that can be played online and off it.

Chess offline

The creater of Soduku application with google gears has also created a chess game that could go offline.

Offline Gadgets

The two applications on Chess and Soduku are available through Offline Gadets.com, this may be a site worth visiting to find out if more games are in the offing.

The list was started recently, and in any case there are very few applications available now. Revisit the page for more applications in the coming weeks. You may also be interested in checking out a list of utilities that I have enjoyed using (oriented towards grad students).
